This is a quick and easy sewing project that I first made 3 years ago when Cupcake was just a baby. We have the cutest picture of her on vacation in Michigan with her fleece pom pom hat on the wall in the hallway. Pumpkin now wears that hat and she’s just as cute in it! (and also uses the matching fleece blanket when we go for our cold morning runs)
Seriously, can this hat be any cuter? No way! And you won’t believe how quick and easy it is to make!
Start by measuring the head you want to put a hat on. Cupcake’s head measures 20″ around and 8″ from the center of the top of her head to the bottom of her ear. So using those numbers I determined I needed to cut my fleece 11″ with the stretch (20″/2 + 1) by 17″ (8″*2 + 1).
Fold your fabric in half and sew up the sides using a half inch seam allowance.
There’s the base of your hat. Now we need to finish off the bottom. So fold up the bottom toward the inside one inch and stitch. Use a zig zag or other decorative stitch that will allow the fabric to stretch.
Your hat is done. Moving on to the pom poms. You can make this any size you want. Here I did small pom poms by cutting my fleece 10″ x 2″ (If you want bigger pom poms cut your strip wider than 2″). You need two of these.
Fold your strip in half and make small slits toward the middle without cutting all the way through the fold.
Open it up and then roll the strip long ways.
When you get to the end, hand stitch the rolled fleece. Go through all the layers two or three times.
Then stitch a pom pom to each corner of the hat.
Go through the pom pom and the hat fabric a few times and make sure that pom pom is really snug. Fluff your pom poms and you are done!
Easy peasy lemon squeezy. You can finish at least 4 of these during a nap time. Well, I guess that depends on how long your kids nap……
Have fun with it! Get a little crazy and put two colors of fleece in those pom poms!
And make a matching stroller blanket. (This was my original pom pom hat. Love it!) These pom poms are bigger and I used two pieces of fleece rolled into each other.
Or use the same printed fleece for your pom poms. (excuse my not pretty phone photo)
And the thickness of your fleece/weight of your pom poms will determine how floppy your hat is. And I’ve got to admit, I love the floppy ones! And so does Cupcake.
So, pick up some fleece (Seriously, shop the remnants. You don’t need much!) and get sewing! I’d love to see your hats after you’re done!
So you who gonna sew a hat for?
