And for my last trick……. I mean, the last project for Sewing for Babies is a bow tie! This was a fun one for me because I don’t usually get to sew for boys!
This can also be adapted for little girls, too. Just make a hair bow instead of a bow tie. But for now let’s get going on making a newborn size bow tie.
Cut 3 pieces of fabric.
1 – 4″ x 10″
1 – 2″ x 4″
1 – 2″ x 14″
Take the 4″x10″ piece of fabric and folding in half, right sides together stitch along the long end of the fabric. Press the seam open and the flip right side out. Stitch the short ends together like so.
And just for funsies I trimmed the corners to reduce bulk, but it’s not really necessary. Flip your fabric so the seam is hidden and in the center.
Take your 2″x4″ piece of fabric and folding in half, right sides together, stitch along the long end. Press your seam open.
Flip right side out.
Now, back to your first piece. Pinch the center to create your bow. You can put a stitch in it to hold it in place if you want.
Then you want to grab your second piece and wrap it around the center of the bow with the seam side out. Stitch across the band close to the bow.
Trim off the excess, then flip right side out. Depending how close you stitched this can be tricky! Good luck.
Now, on to the last piece fabric. Would you be shocked if I told you to fold in half, right sides together and stitch along the long edge? Because that’s what you need to do. And then press your seam open.
Flip right side out. Fold the raw ends in twice and stitch.
Now, it’s velcro time. Cut your hook and loop to 3″. Take your loop side (soft side) and stitch it to the end on the inside of your strap (the side with the seam, shown above). You want the soft side on the inside so when/if you need to it a little bit bigger around the neck the soft side is against the skin.
Thread the neck strap through the band of the bow tie.
Then sew the hook (scratchy piece) to the other end on the outside of the strap.
And you’re done!
If you want to make a bow, say for the hair, for a girl, just skip the neck strap step and add a clip to the back.
So, there you go. We sewed for babies this week. I hope you enjoyed it. I sure did. Hey, did I ever mention that I like to sew?
Have a great weekend! Especially all you mothers! Enjoy your day!
